In 2008, a military engineer estimated as many as 15% of all the spare and replacement microchips purchased by the DOD were counterfeit. A recent U.S. Senate committee report described 1,800 known cases of suspect counterfeit electronic parts in the defense supply chain, supplied by more than 650 companies. Due to the vast number of entities in the supply chain, government officials and defense contractors are often unaware of the ultimate source of many electronic parts in military and defense industry products.
