Supply Chain Complexity: Necessary Evil or Growth Opportunity?

November 21, 2012
Categories: Supply Chain

SCM World recently hosted the virtual Chief Supply Chain Officers’ Summit. One of the most interesting keynote discussions revolved around supply chain complexity, a growing challenge due to globalization and new technologies such as e-commerce and mobile applications.

Kevin O’Marah of SCM World, John Church, SVP Supply Chain of General Mills, and Andreas Backhaus, SVP Global SC & Process Innovation, discussed the question of whether to “Minimise or Manage Complexity in today’s Global Value Chain?”

The key takeaway from this discussion is that complexity can be a competitive advantage for a firm, and add value to the supply chain, but it has to be managed effectively. This environment has led to collaboration across the supply chain. Citing prior SCM research, Kevin O’Mara stated, “Truly collaborative partner relationships solve problems twice as quickly,” and that the “Value of collaboration is very high.”
