The Federal Bureau of Investigation recently launched an alert that brings to light the risks of downloading malware when purchasing pirated software from unknown online sellers.

The FBI joined the National Intellectual Property Rights Coordination (IPR) Center to issue the warning to potential consumers of these products. Malware can reside in both downloaded software as well as in physical discs.

The notice attributes this danger to “Criminals, hackers and hacker groups, and even organized rings.” In addition, the report claims that the “greater danger comes from potential exposure to criminal activity—like identity theft and financial fraud—after malware takes hold of your system.”
