WASHINGTON DC, January 13, 2016 –
Today launches a new eBook: ‘Safeguarding Trade Secrets and Mitigating Threats.’ The book aims to help companies understand how to protect trade secrets and critical business information from cyberattacks, insiders and other threats.

The eBook features a five-step framework to help companies assess and safeguard trade secrets. It also offers guidance and checklists outlining the elements of an effective program to protect trade secrets and critical business information.

“Confidential information is central to a company’s ability to compete and succeed today. The rise in digitized information, cyber threats and complex global operations puts these valuable crown jewels at greater risk than ever before,” stated Pamela Passman, President and CEO of the Center for Responsible Enterprise And Trade ( “This eBook offers practical guidance to enable companies to identify key assets, analyze threats and put business processes in place to safeguard trade secrets and other vital corporate information.”

The five-step framework was originally featured in the WhitepaperEconomic Impact of Trade Secret Theft: A Framework for Companies to Safeguard Trade Secrets and Mitigate Potential Threats, co-developed by CREATe and PwC in 2014. The framework includes identifying trade secrets, conducting a threat assessment, ranking the value of a trade secret and the economic impact of a loss of a trade secret, and steps to secure assets. Each element is discussed in-depth and a case study explores how a company could use the framework within its own organization.

The eBook also features a special section from outlining the management systems necessary for protecting trade secrets and other confidential information. It outlines the eight categories of an effective program:

  • Policies, processes and procedures
  • Information protection team
  • Risk assessment
  • Management of third parties
  • Security and confidentiality management
  • Training and capacity building
  • Monitoring and measurement
  • Corrective actions and improvements

For each category, the eBook offers a description of the business processes that should be in place along with a checklist of top actions a company should take to improve systems.
